Unleashing Uncials

In September we had our first autumn workshop. Peter Lloyd had not visited us before but he has an interesting approach to giving a personal look to a script. Peter began the workshop with a quick session on traditional uncials, but then had us change one or two of the characteristics, such as the x-height or spacing which resulted in several different variations.  During the afternoon we were given a word with which we would base a piece of work on.  It was an excellent workshop, everyone had developed their own individual uncial style script.

Peter says, ‘This workshop is designed to explore basic broad-edged pen scripts using Uncial as a base thereby understanding structures whilst learning about and applying Edward Johnston’s Seven Constants; how they can be manipulated to create new letter variations.

We all have different everyday handwriting and no surprise that this can also be echoed in everyone’s calligraphy. By gaining the confidence to experiment with Johnston’s constants, you will gain the insight and skills to fine tune letter styles to best suit chosen texts.’
